On May 6, 2020, the County of Los Angeles announced that car dealers will be able to resume sales on May 8 from their dealerships with appropriate social distancing procedures. The County has not released any details regarding what specific procedures car dealers will need to follow, if any, though the Los Angeles Times is reporting that retailers that are allowed to resume business on May 8 must provide curb-side pickup. It is unclear if this restriction will apply to car dealers.

Dealers located in the City of Los Angeles should be aware that the City’s order, updated May 4, still states that only the service and parts departments of dealerships may operate. However, in recent statements to the media, Mayor Garcetti has stated that the City will coordinate with the County. Dealers should continue to monitor for additional guidance from the City.

While the exact details of any sales procedures are unclear now, dealers located in Los Angeles County should prepare for reopening sales by updating their social distancing protocols to include sales activities or, if they have not yet adopted a formal social distancing protocol, adopt one now that includes the sales and service departments. You can download the County’s social distancing protocol form.

In addition to complying with the requirements of the County’s Social Distancing Protocol, dealers should also adopt additional measures specific to dealerships to protect customers and employees. These measures should cover areas like test drives, loaner vehicles, and procedures for handling customer vehicles.
